We also need to a pre-Sputnik teaching format, without the emphasis on math and science, with plenty of extracurricular activities. Luis Mellon: I propose that the amount the state and feds spend on educating a child. A voucher for the same amount to be used by the parents to send their children to what school they deem most appropriate. Private or public.

There are people from various backgrounds, with different perspectives on life, who cannot be tested on the same scale. Let the schools decide how they want to educate their students, not the tests.

Iris Shawcroft: First I have to say that there is no way we will ever get our standards for public education up to those of these rather small homo! geneous countries that we like to compare ourselves too. The diversity of our country does not lend itself to a one size fits all philosophy for education. We have people from drastically different income levels, cultures, and outlooks on life. They all learn differently and are taught different things in their lives. I think instead of clamping down on education and passing federal laws that burden our teachers with focusing on exams we should take the opposite approach and allow our schools to diversify their courses. Not every kid is going to college so why should every kid have to focus on these exams when their time may be better spent learning practical skills in the trades?Oh and all Asians, Europeans, and Canadians that go through the education system in their respective countries do is flee their countries to come here because finding a job in their countries is impossible because of the bloated bureaucracies in their home countries. Sylvie Snetting: We are too politically correct and worried about kids self esteem. We pass them even when they should be held back, parents don't get involved enough, kids are unruly and the teachers can't do much about it. It's not for lack of money for education, I wonder how much we spend per child compared to the other countries you mention.
