Early Childhood Education degree to Secondary Education teaching?

Denna Prudente: Typically the answer is no. Early Childhood Education is methods and child development focused. Your degree will teach you about child development, special education, and a small amount of content. Middle School and Secondary education are very content driven. You'll need to choose emphasis areas that you focus on, such as history or math. A degree in one of these will consist mostly of content classes with a few education methods classes on the side. If you got your degree in early childhood education, you'd come out with a teaching certificate, and you'd end up spending around 2 years to go back and get all the content knowledge you'll need to teach at a higher level. You'll also end up needing to take different teaching tests to be re-certified. If I were you, I would start a bachelor's degree at the school close to you and get all of your general education classes out of the way for the first two years. Then you can transfer to the school farther away ! and work on your secondary education degree. You really don't want to spend 4 years getting a teaching degree in an area that you don't want to teach....Show more

Tommy Durrenberger: With this terrible economy, you should really consider being a bit more open minded. I would hope that you would consider earning your ECE B.S. degree and working for Head Start or a high quality preschool that requires their teachers to have the B.S. degrees. In this awful economy, there are lots and lots of unemployed primary grade teachers sitting at home wondering how in the heck did they end up in such a predicament. Depending on what state you live in, getting an entry level job as an elementary school teacher is next to impossible unless you want to work in the inner city or out in the rural areas. Please consider working as a preschool teacher. It's a joyous job and it is very satisfying. Working for Head Start has alot of perks such as paid vacations and a very good health ! insurance policy. I work for Head Start and I love my job....! Scot Rotruck: In most states, there is a certificate for elementary school teaching and another for secondary school teaching. In some states there may be a certificate for middle school teaching. Those certificate usually are received along with a BA degree in education with a focus on either elementary or secondary teaching. However in most states, there is a certificat! e for elementary or secondary teaching that is above and beyond a bachelor's degree in practically any Science, Social Science, or Physical Science area. Of course, that would include a BA in Early Childhood. That certificate can be obtained by taking four to six education courses in a university that is approved by the Department of Education in any particular state. Please check with the nearby university and with the Department of Education in your state. Good luck....Show more
