What is a landscaping job like?

Isaias Badgley: I think landscaping is a great way to make a living. Some of them make very good money, but the work is often seasonal and spotty--it's not as reliable unless you have a lot of it and also do things like snowplowing, ice removal, indoor plant care and so forth, or unless you work in a climate that has no winter season, like Florida. I think it's relaxing--and satisfying work. You care for lawns, trees, bushes, flowers and you learn what grows where and when and how. And you get to see the results of your work in natural beauty. The hours are sometimes long--especially during the growing season--but they are much shorter in the winter. Having your own equipment makes it possible to do a lot of little jobs and keep the work steady--working for a firm may find you laid off in the wintertime. You need mowers, trimmers, hand tools, and possibly a tractor or plow--depending on what you know how to do and what you WANT to do. And most of all, you need knowledge a! bout growing things outside. It's very possible to get seasonal work as a laborer for a landscaping firm--they are always looking for people during the spring and summer to help with the toting, lifting, moving, etc.--though maybe not the actual plant choice and planting; though you will pick it up as you go along. Pay is not extremely high for these jobs--but it CAN be okay. It depends on where you work and how much. And you CAN get training for it--google "landscaping school" in your area. The training can actually help you earn more pay....Show more

Antonette Shappy: What you have described is an unskilled job --- like digging ditches. The hours would be variable depending on the specific job, and you would probably be paid an hourly wage. There would likely be little if any client contact.

Leora Klingelhoets: it dosent pay big money and it is hard work.
