Malcom Fenoff: If you have paid for your plates but just don't have them yet, yes, a cop should be able to tell. I wouldn't count on it though. It's up to you.
Hilma Pestano: How did you pay ? If online your good to go they should post it immediately. If you paid in person same thing you are good to go. If you mailed in your payment it may take awhile to get posted and therefore an officer may run your plates and you will show unregistered until DMV enters your payment and will probably receive a ticket. Otherwise even though you don't have your current tags as long DMV has your payment the officer will be told your ok when he runs your plates. .Now regarding your smog California and most other states and connected to the smog facilities so as soon as you pass smog DMV is notified electronically. Some DMV websites allow you to verify the status of your registration such as in your situation or if your buying a car you can check on the status and any unpaid penalt! ies ect...Just drive a little safer and slower until you get your tags so the cops don't have a reason to pull you over....Show more

Cops usually do not pull ovet unless you are more than a month past the tagSo if you have november 2012 you are okIf you have October 2012 showing they may check you out.If you paid your registrtion online I would say, it takes 24hr for it to update in the main system that the cops see.
