I purchased a used car as is, with a safety issue.?

Chi Alfero: What do you need seat belts for anyway? Are you PLANING to get involved in an accident? If so maybe you shouldn't be driving in the first place. Now clean that baby up real nice, Wax, chrome polish, tire paint and maybe some fuzzy dice for the rear view, and quit sweating the details.

Wilfred Santacruce: What part of AS IS are you confused about!

Mitchel Demry: yes. AS IS measn just that - no warranties or guarantees. You should have had a thorough mechanical inspetion first. Now you just get to fix your car.EDIT: Ah I apologize. I overlooked the part that said you traded a car in. So you did buy it from a dealer. My fault. If it is a safety-related item, most states require that they repair it. You don't mention what state you are in, but you should be within your boundaries to ask them to fix it. No need to go in with a full head of steam. Its likely they didnt know about the fault either - especially since the light came on as you drove! it. So, check to see if they are required to fix it or not. Even so, if you let them know you think the vehicle may be unsafe, I would think they would taek care of it.But can you return it? no. Its still your car....Show more

Emilie Santmyer: and you should have seen that when doing the test drive ... when you buy as is you buy as is you got just what you payed for..... you must check out things before buying man... you do a walk around and look at the outside check the tires the tail pipe under the car for any signs of wear or oil leaks.. you get in a start you check for how well it starts and any funny sounds it should nt make... you check all the buttons and switches to see if they work.. you drive it for 30 minutes and recheck everything you check the first time then you buy or not.. your stuck with it now its your car...Show more

Susan Rambo: Did you buy it from a dealership? If so, most states require that the dealer sell a vehicle that passes the st! ate standards. If you bought it from a dealer, go back to the ! dealer and demand that they fix it or you will complain to the local and state Dept. of Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau. On the other hand, if you bought it from an individual, then your probably stuck.

Andre Winegar: Check the specific laws for your state but most have a safety standard that must be met for a vehicle to be legally sold. Items that must work include signals, brakes, wipers, tires must have adequate tread depth etc.

King Bringle: if you bought it as is i'd say it's yours to deal with
